Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari arrives in India to attend SCO meeting, no sign of direct talks

Benaulim (Goa): Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari arrived in Goa on Thursday to attend a conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This is the first such high-level visit to India from the neighboring country since 2011. Bhutto Zardari’s visit to take part in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting is taking place amid tensions between India and Pakistan in relation to border crossings over a number of issues, including the continuing trade of trademarks.

People with knowledge of the preparations for the OSC summit said no plans have come for the status of the appointment meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Bhutto Zardari as there is no request from the Pakistan side for it so far. Bhutto Zardari told the matter, “I am very happy to reach Goa to lead the Pakistan representation at the SCO Foreign Minister’s meeting. I hope that the SCO CFM meeting will be successful.

Before leaving for Goa, Pakistan’s foreign minister had said, “My decision to attend this meeting highlights Pakistan’s strong commitment to the SCO’s charter.” “During my visit, which particularly focuses on the SCO, I look forward to constructive discussions with my counterparts from friendly countries,” he said.

Bhutto Zardari will be the first Foreign Minister of Pakistan to visit India since 2011. The first was Hina Rabbani Khar’s visit to India in 2011 as Pakistan’s foreign minister for peace talks. Khar is handling the responsibility of Minister of State for External Affairs.

In May 2014, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif visited India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In December 2015, former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Pakistan and a few days later Modi embraced that country.
