Parenting blunders that could lead to mental health problems for your child

Parenting can be a complicated process for people. If things are not done properly then raising a child can turn into a nightmare. In this process one should be responsible and should not make any careless mistake so that the physical and mental health of the child remains good. There are many mistakes that can vary from not being too involved in your child’s life to being over-protective and not allowing enough privacy to your child.

While some of these mistakes are not irreversible and can be corrected quickly, there may be other mistakes that can cause permanent mental health problems for your child. Some of these are mistakes:

promoting toxic competition

The society insists on the children to perform very well in school and considers only certain career streams to pay well. This leads to a narrow-minded parenting approach where you don’t let your kids choose what to do. This can lead to them losing their confidence due to being compared all the time, suffering from depression and anxiety, and losing all interest in the stream they are enrolled in.

micro management

When you micro-manage your babies, it allows them to spoon-feed every solution. Due to this, problem solving mindset is not developed properly in the children. As a result, children become highly dependent on their parents and are unable to stand on their own. Despite being intelligent, their emotional immaturity does not allow them to solve life’s small problems properly. It is very important to teach children to be independent.

Naughty

Sometimes parents tend to control their children too much. They stipulate all conditions and do not provide any freedom to choose or enjoy them. This bullying nature in parents leads them to punish their children for breaking the rules and in the process, children lose all self-esteem and confidence. The anxiety starts and then building trust and closeness with others becomes a big task for such children.

invalidate the child’s feelings

Keeping good communication with your children is important for them to express their feelings with you. But when they do, be a good listener to them, rather than trying to invalidate them by refuting those feelings or talking about your experiences. Try to understand their feelings, not school them on that.

child neglect

While being over-involved is problematic, not being involved can leave your children alienated from you in the long run. Ignoring your kids and not showing enough appreciation for their achievements can lead to a lack of confidence where they feel like a low achiever. By this they always try to prove themselves worthy of your love and attention. Emotional neglect can cause mental health problems for children because there will be no one to listen to their problems and make them feel heard.
