Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam (MMI), a city-based non-political organization, has appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene and ensure that the National Green Tribunal, Southern Zone remains functional.

MMI coordinator V. Easwaran informed that the tenure of retired Justice P. Jyotimani, chairman of the National Green Tribunal Southern Zone, has ended and no effort has been made to extend his term or appoint a new chairman. This has paved the way for NGT-SZ to remain non-functional.

Shri Easwaran informed that since last 15 years MMI Vellore has been struggling a lot to find solutions to the problems arising out of dump yards. It was in 2013 that MMI transferred to NGT – SZ and the verdict came in 2018. But the civic body is yet to act on the decision.

P. Jyotimani, chairman of the monitoring committee, recently visited Sent to Coimbatore city and directed the corporation to fully implement the decision within 15 months. The chairperson also constituted a committee of local people to oversee the Vellore dump yard. It has come as a ray of hope for the local residents. But at this juncture, the term of the Speaker is coming to an end, in a big blow to the residents of Podanur and Vellore.

Therefore, he urged the Chief Minister to intervene and ensure that the NGT-SZ remains functional. He also said that he had filed an execution petition before the National Green Tribunal – New Delhi holding the Coimbatore Corporation in contempt for not implementing the judgment. He also said that the issue of non-functional NGT-SZ will also be taken up with NGT New Delhi.
