The decision to merge the Pendurthy assembly constituency with the proposed Anakapalle district has drawn criticism from both the opposition and the ruling party leaders. Pendurathi is a part and parcel of the city and should reside in Visakhapatnam district, argues the general public.
Visakhapatnam was one of the largest districts of India during the British period, stretching from Visakhapatnam to the farthest corners of Srikakulam. After the reorganization of the districts earmarked for Ugadi this year, it is poised to become one of the smallest districts of the state. The reluctance of the people of Pendurathi and other places in Visakhapatnam city for the merger of Pendurathi into Anakapalle district is understandable. It is easier for them to reach the government offices in the city instead of going to Anakapalle.
Upon reorganization, the new Visakhapatnam district will hardly have any industry left, which provides employment to the local youth.
The wide BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) road, which connects Pendurthy to the city, provides seamless connectivity to motorists. Pendurathi railway station, which needs to be developed as a satellite station, will now be included in Anakapalle district to ease the increasing congestion at Visakhapatnam Junction. Situated close to BRTS road, this train provides easy access to commuters to reach Hanumanthavaka, Madhurwada and other areas.
“Pendurthi has an urban population of 1.80 lakh in GVMC. Visakhapatnam International Airport is barely 10 km from Pendurthi and was under Visakhapatnam Parliamentary Constituency, before it was included in Anakapalle Parliamentary Constituency in 2009. Visakhapatnam is poised to become the working capital of AP, it has every need to sustain Pendurathi to fulfill its need of future growth. I have already represented the matter to the Chief Minister, expressing the concern of the people, as being his representative is my responsibility,” said Annamareddy Adeep Raj, MLA from Anakapalle. Hindu on Tuesday.
“The residents of Pendurthi are part of the city and cannot imagine going to Anakapalle for their day to day activities. The land bank required for the future development of the city is in Pendurthy constituency. Once you (YSR Congress government) transfer it to Anakapalle district, your plan to develop the city will fail. It is wrong to include Pendurathi in Anakapalle district in the name of decentralisation, and we appeal to the chief minister to rescind his decision,” says senior TDP leader and former Pendurathi MLA Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy.
