After being reduced by the central government excise duty on petrol and diesel ₹5 more ₹10 respectively, 22 states and union territories also opted to cut Value Added Tax (VAT) on motor fuels, providing relief to customers.
However, 14 states and union territories have not reduced VAT, the petroleum ministry said in a statement on Friday.
The states include Maharashtra, National Capital Territory of Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Andaman and Nicobar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Rajasthan.
On the other hand, the biggest reduction in petrol prices has been seen in the Union Territory of Ladakh, where the prices have come down. ₹13.43
It is followed by Karnataka and Puducherry, where petrol rates have come down. ₹13.35 and Rs 12.85.
Apart from this, the highest cut for diesel has also been done by the Union Territory of Ladakh, which has led to a fall in prices. ₹19.61 per litre, followed by Karnataka and Puducherry.
Apart from the reduction in excise duty, the additional deduction is the lowest in Uttarakhand.
After the change in duty, the most expensive petrol is being sold in Rajasthan ₹111.10 per liter (Jaipur), followed by Mumbai ( ₹109.98) and Andhra Pradesh ( ₹109.05). fuel is down ₹100-a-litre mark in most BJP ruled states except Karnataka ( ₹100.58), Bihar ( ₹105.90), Madhya Pradesh ( ₹107.23) and Ladakh ( ₹102.99).
Similarly, now the most expensive diesel is being sold in Rajasthan. ₹95.71 per liter (Jaipur), followed by Andhra Pradesh ( ₹95.18) and Mumbai ( ₹94.14).
The cheapest diesel is in Mizoram ₹79.55 per litre. `
price of petrol ₹103.97 per liter in Delhi, and diesel is sold at ₹86.67 per liter.
VAT rates vary from state to state, leading to differences in fuel rates.
The central government said that the cut in excise duty announced on Wednesday night is the biggest ever cut in excise duty.
“A part of it rolls back ₹13 more ₹16 per liter increase in taxes on petrol and diesel between March 2020 and May 2020 to avoid falling on consumers to avoid the sharp fall in international oil prices at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,” it said.
That hike in excise duty took central taxes on petrol to their highest level. ₹32.9 per liter and that on diesel ₹31.8 liters.
The total increase in the price of petrol since 5th May 2020 was the sum total of the government’s decision to increase the excise duty to a record level. ₹38.78 per litre. Diesel rates have increased during this period ₹29.03 per litre.
