Petrol, diesel prices in the country have increased for the third consecutive day on Saturday i.e. on October 2. The month itself started with a huge jump as state-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) increased the prices of petrol. While petrol has become costlier by 22 to 30 paise, the rate of diesel has increased by 30 paise per liter. This is the fourth hike in petrol prices since the end of a three-week long hiatus in rate revision.
After the latest revision, petrol price in Delhi increased by 25 paise from Rs 102.14, while diesel became costlier by 30 paise from Rs 90.47 per litre. In Mumbai, a liter of petrol became costlier by 24 paise and its price went up to Rs 108.19. Similarly, the price of one liter of diesel in the financial capital increased by 32 paise to Rs 98.16.
Consumers in Chennai had to pay Rs 99.80 for a liter of petrol, which is an increase of 22 paise. Diesel saw a jump of 28 paise and was priced at Rs 95.02 per litre. The revised price of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 102.77 per liter, which is 30 paise more expensive and diesel has increased by 30 paise and is priced at Rs 93.57 per litre.
International oil prices are trading at a three-year high with the global benchmark Brent trading at $78.64 a barrel. Rising fuel prices have a cascading effect as it affects the prices of other commodities as well. While the rising trend in international crude oil prices is only part of the story of fuel inflation; Taxes levied on both the major fuels in the country are a major reason behind the current levels of fuel prices. In addition, prices are revised on a daily basis by state-run oil refiners like Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Indian Oil. They take into account the crude oil prices in the global markets as well as rupee-dollar exchange rates. The new rates have come into effect from 6 am every day.
