Pfizer says Covid-19 vaccine efficacy erodes over time

Pfizer Inc. said data from the US and Israel showed that the efficacy of its COVID-19 vaccine diminishes over time, and that a booster dose was safe and effective in eliminating the virus and new variants.

The company detailed the data in a presentation Friday at a meeting of the Food and Drug Administration’s external advisors.

The panel is expected to recommend whether more Americans should get booster shots.

“Real-world data from Israel and the United States suggest that rates of success infection are rising rapidly among individuals who have previously been vaccinated,” Pfizer said in its presentation.

Researchers at Pfizer said in the presentation that the decrease in effectiveness is “primarily due to a lack of vaccine immune responses over time,” rather than the delta version.

In addition to a Pfizer presentation by the FDA on its website, Friday’s panel will include presentations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, FDA staff and researchers from Israel and the UK, according to a meeting agenda.

According to the agenda, officials in Israel will present data from that country on booster protection against infection and serious disease, while a professor of medical statistics at the University of Bristol will present data on the effectiveness of real-world vaccines.
