‘Pink polling’ booth & women voters lead the way in Baramulla, marking highest turnout since 1984

Baramulla: A village where Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims have lived in harmony for many years, Lagama voted Monday in the fifth phase of the ongoing general election. Located around four km from Uri town, the village is part of Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency.

According to reports, Baramulla recorded a provisional turnout of 56.73 percent — the highest since 1984. Voters here turned out to vote in large numbers in what was the first general election since the abrogation of Article 370.

Many voters ThePrint spoke to said their main issues were a stable water supply and road connectivity to far flung villages in border areas. Youngsters among them underlined that employment was the main issue for them this election season.

In Lagama village, with 662 women and 324 male voters, the Election Commission of India (ECI) set up a ‘pink booth’ managed entirely by women polling officers. This was intended to persuade women voters to come out in large numbers.
