professionals

  1. The Mahindra Thar is a beautiful looking SUV and there is no doubt that you will get all the attention on the road. Yes, it is long, heavy and very muscular. Add to that stance thanks to those tires and it’s a mighty mix of everything you could want an SUV to have!
  2. Mahindra Thar achieved a 4-star crash test rating when the car was tested by global safety watchdog, Global NCAP and this is yet another achievement for the Indian manufacturer.

  3. The cabin has also been heavily upgraded in the features department and gets a touchscreen infotainment system for the first time. It’s a new 7.0-inch unit with in-built navigation and smartphone integration like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  4. In terms of engine options, the new Thar gets a 2.0-litre mStallion 150 TGDI petrol engine that makes 150 bhp at 5,000 rpm and 320 Nm between 1,500-3,000 rpm. The diesel engine is a 2.2-litre mHawk 130 that makes 130 bhp at 3,750 rpm and 300 Nm of peak torque between 1,600-2,800 rpm. Both the engines also get the option of a 6-speed automatic gearbox
  5. The Thar gets a mechanical 4×4 transfer case standard with four-wheel low, four-wheel high and two-wheel drive modes and a low crawl ration of 42:1 that can multiply the low end torque by 2.48 times. It is equipped with independent suspension at the front while a multi-link unit at the rear. This makes it a very capable off-roader

Shortcoming

  1. Though it’s great off-road, the Thar’s on-road manners are something else. Ride quality is bumpy and take on any road, tight suspension, doesn’t make you feel comfortable
  2. The 2-door and 4-seat configuration is a bit impractical as sitting in the second row can be a bit challenging. This may be addressed once the company brings out a 5-door version
