PM Modi shares light moments with Mirabai Chanu; what was said here

During his visit to Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while he was interacting with the beneficiaries of several central government schemes, shared a light moment with Olympian Saikhom Mirabai Chanu.

PM checked in with Mirabai to see how her training is progressing and whether she has managed to come out of the full range of being honored etc.

Meera told the Prime Minister that she is now concentrating on her training and preparation for the upcoming programmes.

Before parting ways, the Prime Minister reminded Mirabai Chanu, “Do you remember the work I asked you to do, how is it progressing?”

Meera replied with a smile, “On the job, sir.”

This reference was being made when Prime Minister Modi met Olympians at his residence in Delhi and asked all Olympians to go to different schools across the country and interact with students and encourage them to take up sports .

Weightlifter Mirabai who started off as a young girl with a wooden lift and won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and since then, has been an icon for female athletes especially in the Northeast. Recently, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honored him at a program organized at Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, where Yogi gave him a check of Rs 1.5 crore.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh felicitated Chanu and presented him with a prize of Rs 20 lakh. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India’s highest civilian sporting honour, in 2018. Chanu was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2018.

Upon her return from the Olympics, Mirabai was promoted to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police by the Government of Manipur. He had earlier worked as a ticket collector in the Indian Railways.
