As Gujarat goes to the second and final round of polling on December 5, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking ahead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the two-day national office bearers meeting of BJP on Monday. BJP national president JP Nadda will preside over the meeting.
The preparations and strategy for the year 2023 elections are likely to be discussed in the meeting. The party is eyeing several crucial elections next year with important states like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh etc.
The year is expected to begin with elections to the three legislative assemblies of the north-eastern states namely Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya in February. Then in May, elections will be held in the southern state of Karnataka which is important for the BJP as it is the only southern state currently under its rule.
Karnataka is also important because in the beginning of 2018, the BJP was defeated by the Congress-JDS alliance. The party eventually came to power with the support of defectors from other parties but struggled with internal conflicts within the party. The BJP also changed its chief minister and currently, the less powerful Basavaraj Bommai is managing the state.
Then in November-December of 2023, the real battle for BJP will begin. The elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are very important as in 2018 they were seen as a dent in the image of the ‘New BJP’ led by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, The party lost all three states in 2018 and the damage in Chhattisgarh was beyond repair.
The party tried some politics with Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and achieved tremendous results. The BJP successfully stormed back to power in Madhya Pradesh with the help of Jyotiraditya Scindia’s rebellion, while the Congress government in Rajasthan is on a tenuous leash with senior leader Sachin Pilot also showing a rebellious attitude.
After delimitation, elections are also expected to be held next year in the new Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
