New Delhi With India taking over the presidency of the G20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought cooperation from all political leaders and chief ministers in organizing various G20 events.
A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said the Prime Minister stressed the need for teamwork during the all-party meeting on Monday.
“He added that the G20 Presidency would help showcase parts of India beyond the traditional megacities, thus bringing out the uniqueness of each part of our country,” he added.
Noting that India’s G20 chairmanship belongs to the entire country, and a unique opportunity to showcase the country’s strength to the entire world, Modi also said that there is currently global curiosity and fascination towards India, which is reflected in India’s G20 chairmanship. Highlighting the large number of visitors to India during India’s G20 Presidency, he noted the potential to boost tourism and boost the local economy of the places where the G20 meetings will be held.
India took over the chairmanship of the influential grouping from Indonesia on 1 December.
The meeting was attended by other ministers including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The MEA statement said that during the meeting there were brief interventions by the Home Minister and the Finance Minister.
According to the ministry, a detailed presentation was also made detailing aspects of India’s G20 priorities.
Earlier in the day, discussions were held at the first Sherpa meeting of G20 under the chairmanship of India. The discussion on environment, technological change for the global and regional economy and green growth and lifestyle was initiated by India’s G20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant through an overview of India’s G20 priorities.
Kant highlighted India’s role in using its G20 chairmanship to provide a greater voice to the ‘Global South’ and create win-win cooperation between developing countries and advanced economies.
The theme for India’s G20 chairmanship will be ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’. After assuming the presidency, on 3 December Prime Minister Modi wrote in a blog post that some countries were stuck in a “zero-sum mentality” fighting over territory or resources and weaponizing the supply of essential goods .
