A police dog named Rio retired after serving eight years.
A video of a police dog retiring after eight years of service is doing the rounds on social media. Dogs are known for their loyalty, and they are very useful when it comes to sniffing out a criminal. This is why they are trained to further enhance their sense of smell.
The video was shared on Instagram on May 14 by a page ‘Dog’, with the caption: “Thank you for your service Rio.” This credits the Instagram account of the Georgia Police K9 Foundation.
A police officer announcing about Rio also thanks the dog for ensuring his handler’s safety in every mission. Officials then say that the dog “can now take a good rest”.
The video has garnered over 8.2 lakh views and over one lakh likes on Instagram. Users have also commented openly.
“His little shaved arm. He must have had a recent vet visit that put him in retirement. Again, 8 years of service is a long time. Sweet boy, I hope he gets one with some little ones.” Will find good family, who will hug him every day by snatching table scraps,” commented one user predicting that he might be battling some medical issues which led to his retirement.
“Thank you so much for your service! You are the best guy,” wrote another user on the post.
“Congratulations K9 Rio!! You are a great boy, enjoy retirement,” commented a third user.
Dogs have served humans in various capacities. Some of them are bred for livestock in addition to their role as companion animals, search and rescue dogs and sniffer dogs. These K9 squads are trained to detect illegal narcotics or chemical weapons.
Last year, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in a new initiative decided to use the services of its retired fighting dogs as “therapy dogs” to help speedy recovery of personnel undergoing medical treatment and also for their specially abled. Children.
Dogs, currently retired from these central forces, are usually handed over to animal non-profit groups or kept in a retirement home within the organization for post-retirement care.
