He said on Sunday that the Assam Police is working with Muslims in the state to “rationalize” madrassa education.

There are about 3,000 registered and unregistered madrassas in Assam.

Sarma said the police were coordinating with Bengali Muslims, who have a positive attitude towards education, to create a “good atmosphere” in the madrassas.

He said science and mathematics would also be taught as subjects in madrassas and the right to education would be respected and a database of teachers would be maintained.
