Sharing the details of various projects executed at Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port, Shri Paliwal said that Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti, which brings together 16 Ministries of Central Government and State Government for integrated planning and speedy implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects. He said that the Chennai port would be commercially viable for at least a few more decades and it was proposed to execute a long-term mission of executing development works. Along with the elevated corridor project, six development works including construction of bunker berths within the port, development of goods shed, construction of buffer parking yard, direct reception entrance, electrification of railway lines and historic construction of multiple Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) at Mappedu in Tiruvallur District.
Shri Paliwal, who is also the Chairman and Managing Director of Kamarajar Port Limited, said that the infrastructure for construction of Common User Marine Liquid Terminals, Phase 1 (Phase 2) Container Terminals, IOCL Captive Jetty, Ro-Ro (Roll On) development/roll off) cum general cargo berth and dredging operation will be taken up at the port.
38 Mega Project
SP Somashekar, Regional Officer (Chennai), NHAI, said 38 mega projects of over 1,500 km worth Rs 40,000 crore were under implementation in the state with seven more projects in the pipeline.
Giving a video presentation of the restart of the stalled Chennai Port-Madurvoyal Elevated Corridor, he said that this facility would be a reality within three years. Mr Somashekar said the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway would be executed in three phases under 10 packages, the work of which would start by the end of May. The main attraction of the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway will be the construction of 12 interchange points for smooth entry and exit of heavy vehicles without affecting the main traffic.
Additional Chief Secretary, Industries Department, S. Krishnan said that the PM Gati Shakti initiative will pave the way for bringing all the stakeholders of the central and state governments on a single platform. He said the development of a second airport for Chennai was finalized with the stakeholders involved in talks with the state government.
