Bahujan Samaj Party has written to the Election Commission demanding a complete ban on all types of pre-poll surveys from six months before the elections.
A few days back, BSP chief and former UP chief minister Mayawati had alleged that all pre-poll surveys conducted by media outlets are rigged and hence they should be banned six months before the elections.
BSP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Chandra Mishra, in an 11-page letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, wrote, “Ban pre-poll surveys by media outlets six months before the election to enable voters to vote for the elections.” To exercise their rights to vote independent, fair and unaffected by misleading presumptions in pre-election polls shown by media sponsored polls.
Mishra has also said how his party was surprised by a pre-poll survey in September that allegedly tried to demoralize BSP workers. Mishra further said in the letter that this move of banning pre-poll surveys was much needed to conduct free and fair elections. The letter also mentioned how some agencies had predicted in their exit polls that the BJP was winning the West Bengal election but the result was quite different.
Earlier, Samajwadi Party chief and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had also supported the BSP chief’s demand and alleged that all such surveys were dubious and were brought with money. “I think he has made the right demand, we all know that all surveys are funded. I agree with this demand,” he had said.
