But neither side could find a winner, making the league title close to calling for just seven matches.
Billed as one of the biggest matches in Premier League history – between two of the best sides English football has seen – the competition lived up to the hype at a cracking Etihad.
After opening a cage, the game suddenly bursts to life.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alison Baker ran from her line to deny Raheem Sterling, whom Jesus had set up as the home team for the first time.
But the Brazil international was powerless to stop De Bruyne’s wickedly deflected opening goal after being fed by a quick free-kick in the fifth minute.
The Belgian midfielder overtook Fabinho and fired a shot that hit defender Joel Matip and went into the far post.
A stewards had to remove the blue glow from the pitch as home fans celebrated and the pace was with City.
But their wildest celebration was cut short eight minutes later when Jota scored his 15th Premier League goal of the season.
Andy Robertson crossed the far post where fellow full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold forwarded the ball to Portugal, who made no mistake.
Liverpool fans were in full voice in one corner of the suddenly packed field.
In the middle of the first half, City goalkeeper Ederson almost paid for a surprising lapse in concentration, allowing Jota to dribble within centimeters of crossing the line with a sliding.
City’s possession was capped and the openings were better but Liverpool continued to threaten the right side through Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.
De Bruyne came close to restoring City’s lead when he shot wide after a sharp turn and a powerful shot from Joao Cancello was blocked minutes later.
But the home team was exposed less than 10 minutes before half-time when Cancello scored a deep run from Jesus, who lifted the ball over Alison from the edge of the six-yard box.

Incredibly, Liverpool were back in the competition within seconds of the restart, before many fans took their seats again.
Salah picked fellow forward Mane, who ran the ball through the middle and beat Ederson to celebrate his 30th birthday in style.
City, who had a 14-point lead over Liverpool in January, were furious and Jota forced Ederson to make a fine save early on.
The home team thought they had taken the lead again in the 63rd minute but Sterling’s goal was dismissed by VAR for offside.
The two managers swapped attacking substitutions – Jurgen Klopp brought winger Luis Diaz on 20 minutes for Jota and Pep Guardiola threw at Riyad Mahrez for Sterling.
Jack Grealish also entered the field for City while Roberto Firmino was brought in for Liverpool.
Mahrez had a great chance of winning the match in the last seconds of stoppage time but picked up his shot over the bar.
