President Draupadi Murmu appointed Justice DY Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India

New Delhi: Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said Justice DY Chandrachud was on Monday appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India.

He will take oath on November 9, a day after sitting CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit attained the age of 65.

Justice Lalit has a brief tenure of 74 days, while Justice Chandrachud will serve as CJI for two years.

Rijiju tweeted, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble President, appoints a Judge of the Supreme Court, Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 9, 22.”

Justice Chandrachud will step down on November 10, 2024.
