Presidential Election 2022: Senior Congress leaders are likely to attend a meeting of opposition parties, which will be organized by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to deliberate on a joint opposition candidate for the post of President. The Chief Minister of West Bengal on Tuesday left for New Delhi for a meeting of non-BJP parties.
He said Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Surjewala could attend the meeting on behalf of the party.
Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee last week wrote to 22 opposition leaders and chief ministers requesting them to attend the meeting at the National Capital’s Constitution Club on June 15.
Banerjee has called a meeting at the National Capital’s Constitution Club on June 15 to discuss building a consensus on the opposition candidate.
Several opposition parties are likely to attend the meeting and take forward the discussion on a joint candidate.
The election of the President of India will be held on 18 July.
With numbers in its favour, the ruling NDA has half the vote of the electorate and its candidates can easily make it through with the support of some independent parties like BJD, AIADMK and YSR-CP.
The leader said the CPI(M) would depute MPs to attend the opposition meeting called by Mamata Banerjee to deliberate on the presidential candidate.
