The company did not disclose the deal size of these four films.
However, the move further cements the long-standing partnership between Prime Video and Yash Raj Films, with the former already hosting YRF titles. Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Silsila, Chandni, Dil To Pagal Hai, Thugs of Hindostan, War, Mardaani, and others.
Gaurav Gandhi, Country Head, Prime Video India, said in a statement, “At Prime Video, we are focused on bringing the biggest and best of entertainment to our customers and this partnership with Yash Raj Films is the perfect showcase of that commitment. “
“Over the last four years, we have been continuously bringing out blockbuster movies to entertain the audience from the comfort of their homes and on the screens of their choice. The global digital premiere, four weeks after the theatrical release, will not only delight our Prime members, but will also help increase the reach and viewing base of these highly anticipated films – in India and across the world,” said Gandhi.
To be sure, YRF remains one of the few film studios that have stuck to their plans for theatrical release and have not opted for a direct-to-digital premiere during the months of the Covid-induced lockdown. However, the deal allows Prime Video to stream movies within four weeks of their release in theaters. The norm was between six and eight weeks before the pandemic hit.
Theater owners, especially the country’s top multiplexes, have consistently reiterated the need for tall windows for cinema to maintain its status as the primary film viewing medium. Before the pandemic, there have been examples of shows from films like come to the wedding And 1921 Cancellation by multiplexes because they refused to comply with the long window order.
Akshay Vidhan, Senior Vice President, Yash Raj Films said, “In Prime Video, the company has found a partner who shares its vision of not only providing engaging cinematic experiences, but also providing global distribution of stories from the Indian entertainment ecosystem. . “We’re excited to have this exclusive streaming deal with Prime Video, which will enable our upcoming titles to travel beyond geographies and add more value to Prime Video’s content library,” he added.
