A consultant will be appointed to study its strength and crisis, says B Chandra Mohan
Principal Secretary B Chandra Mohan said here on Saturday that the Tourism Department of Tamil Nadu is in the process of appointing a consultant to study the positive and negative aspects of eco-tourism in the Nilgiris. He said a three-month study would soon be conducted to examine several parameters for tourism activities. Addressing the gathering at the annual general meeting of The Planters Association (PAT), Coimbatore in the city, he said, “Eucalyptus is going through a crisis.
There are some towns that accept tourists beyond their carrying capacity. However, a large number of homestays are coming up across the district without any regulatory framework, which leads to issues.” Therefore, a study will be conducted to convert Nilgiris into “most happening eco-tourism zone”.
“We will develop a master plan and formulate policies for it,” he said. “The last such committee was formed about 50 years ago. It is high time to review the wage fixation process for plantation at least once in 50 years,” he said.
The meeting was attended by TJ Varghese Vaidyan, Vice President of PAT, Pradeep Kumar, Secretary, United Planters Association of South India (UPASI) President Jeffrey Rebello and several other members of the Association.
