Privilege motion moved against CBI, ED officials in Bengal Assembly

West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee referred the matter to the Committee of Privileges and urged the panel to examine it and submit its report to the House in its next session.

A privilege motion was moved in the West Bengal Assembly on November 17 against two CBI and ED officials for allegedly defaming the chair of the Speaker by arresting three TMC MLAs in connection with the Narada sting case without informing them. was substantially reduced.

Moving the motion, TMC MLA and minister Tapas Roy said that three legislators of the ruling party – Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra and Subrata Mukherjee – were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Narada case earlier this year. But no one was allowed. Speaker Biman Banerjee was neither sought nor informed.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also filed a charge sheet against the trio.

Mr Roy said this action of both the CBI and the ED has brought down the dignity of the chair of the chairman and the latter has led to breach of privileges against Deputy SP Satyendra Singh of CBI and Rathin Biswas, assistant director of ED.

Speaker Biman Banerjee referred the matter to the Committee of Privileges and urged the panel to examine it and submit its report to the House in its next session.

He also said that the proceedings of the committee will be treated as confidential.
