Prohibitory orders were imposed in a part of Neemuch town following a dispute between two groups over the installation of an idol near a dargah in Madhya Pradesh, leading to tension in the area.
They said that on Monday night both the groups got into an argument and pelted stones at each other, after which the police fired tear gas shells to disperse them. Later, Additional District Magistrate Neha Meena ordered imposition of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) Section 144 (Prohibition of assembly of five or more people) in Neemuch city police station limits.
Neemuch Superintendent of Police Suraj Kumar Verma told reporters that so far four cases have been registered and nine people arrested. A police officer suffered a knee injury in the incident. He said that some people placed an idol (of Lord Hanuman) near the dargah, which led to a dispute between the two groups falling under Neemuch city police station area.
The officer said the police then asked members of both the groups to come to the police control room for discussion, but some people allegedly started pelting stones and damaged some motorcycles.
He said that so far no civilian casualties have been reported in the incident. Later, adequate police force was deployed in the area and residents were asked to stay at home.
The official said members of both the groups gathered at the spot as it is a mixed population area. He said the police used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The officer also said that the police will examine the CCTV footage of the area and take action against the stone-pelters. When asked whether any religious place was damaged in the incident, he said that the area is being videographed to ascertain it.
