Protest against Vizhinjam port called off

Thiruvananthapuram:

The over 130-day-long protest by fishermen against the under-construction Vizhinjam sea port was called off for the time being on Tuesday.

The withdrawal of the agitation was announced by Vicar General Eugene Pereira, who has been seen at the forefront of the protests.

He, however, said that the protest is not being called off as they are satisfied with the steps taken or the promises made by the state government.

Perera told reporters here that it was being withdrawn as the protest had reached a certain stage and if needed, they would raise it again.

A day earlier, leaders of various religious groups in Kerala met fishermen protesting against the under-construction Vizhinjam sea port here as part of ongoing efforts to bring peace in the region, which witnessed violent agitations recently.

For the past few months, a large number of people have been protesting outside the main entrance of the multi-purpose port at nearby Mullur.

They are pressing for their seven-point demand, which includes halting construction work on the multi-crore project and conducting a coastal impact study.

The agitators allege that the unscientific construction of artificial sea walls, as part of the upcoming port, was one of the reasons for the increasing coastal erosion.
