The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday said electronic parts maker Foxconn will resume operations at its facility in neighboring Sriperumbudur and has been advised to augment the infrastructure provided to employees. The government’s remarks came after workers protested last week after more than 100 of them reportedly suffered food poisoning after eating at a facility run by his firm.
In an official release on Saturday, the Tamil Nadu government said a meeting was held which was attended by Labor Commissioner Atul Anand, Principal Secretary Industries Department S Krishnan, Additional Director General of Police – Law and Order, Thamaraikannan and senior government officials including representatives of Foxconn . group participated.
During the meeting, the Taiwan-based firm was advised to enhance the infrastructural facilities such as adequate accommodation and rest rooms etc. to be provided to the employees.
“The hostels provided to the employees should have a quality certificate issued by the Collector and the food should be prepared and served on time at the residence of the employees,” the release said.
The government also directed that employees who want leave be granted immediate sanction and the company should utilize the services of manpower agencies on such occasions.
The Foxconn representatives assured to implement the guidelines as directed by the government, the release said.
“The officials also assured to provide quality food to over 15,000 employees and said that they will soon start production at the facility,” the release said.
“The facility will be expanded and new jobs will be created at the unit,” the release quoted Foxconn officials as saying.
Meanwhile, the government said, the Tamil Nadu State Industries Promotion Corporation (SIPCOT) was engaged in the construction of hostels to accommodate 18,750 people at a cost of Rs 570 crore at Vallam Vadagal in Sriperumbudur.
The 11-storey building, spread over 20 acres of land, is expected to be completed in 15 months, the release said.
