The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sought details of doctors from the Income Tax Department who had allegedly received freebies from six pharma companies, including Micro Labs, which manufactures Dolo 650, against whom raids were conducted last month.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the administrative body for the IT department, in July had accused manufacturers of being widely used. Dolo-650 Tablet for indulging in “immoral practices” and distributing free gifts of approx. 1,000 crores to doctors and medical professionals in return for promoting its products.
On July 6, the Income Tax Department had raided 36 premises of Micro Labs Limited in Bengaluru in nine states.
In a letter dated August 3, the NMC requested CBDT chairman Nitin Gupta to “send the names along with the registration numbers and addresses of the doctors involved so that those details can be sent to the respective state medical councils for information and necessary action”. .
In the letter, NMC member Dr Yogendra Malik Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) drew attention to Section 6.8 of the Medical Council of India (Professional Conduct. Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002. He said that it would be pertinent to mention here that in the first instance, any complaint regarding professional misconduct by a registered medical practitioner is to be acted upon by the concerned State Medical Council.
“I would like to emphasize that Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB), National Medical Commission is committed to inculcate ethics in the lives of registered doctors and will not tolerate any malpractice,” Malik said.
