The government has launched a vehicle scrappage policy to phase out motor vehicles older than 15 years from the roads in the union territory.

Budget 2023-24 introduced in the assemblySaid that the policy will be formulated on the basis of the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Regulation of Vehicles Scrapping Facility Amendment) Rules, 2022 notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India.

A policy will be formulated for scrapping motor vehicles older than 15 years with the objectives of reducing pollutants and fuel consumption and recycling of scrapped vehicle parts.

To encourage people to scrap their old motor vehicles, measures like subsidy on motor tax payable on purchase of new vehicle, license for Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSF) etc. will be included in the policy.

To replace its aging fleet and improve mobility in urban areas and inter-state routes, the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation has invited e-tenders for procurement of 50 electric and 50 diesel buses. Soon these buses will be made operational. In addition, new bus bodies for 10 existing buses will be manufactured and put into operation.

Online Automated Fare Collection Machines will be used by PRTCs and a National Common Mobility Card will be introduced for the public to pay ticket fare through these machines.

In order to reduce air pollution and promote green vehicles, Puducherry Electric Mobility Policy will be notified, and through this policy, subsidy will be provided for purchase of e-vehicles by the public to reduce the financial burden of purchase. Will. ₹10 crore per annum. It will be implemented for the next four financial years from 2023-24 to 2026-27.

In order to reduce road accidents and deaths in Puducherry, in line with the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the Transport Department in coordination with the Traffic Police and Public Works Department will improve road safety infrastructure besides creating road safety awareness and Enforcement of road rules, the budget said.
