Has the Congress finally chosen its chief ministerial candidate for the Punjab Assembly elections? And is this the current Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi? From what can be seen on its official Twitter handle, the old party used actor-philanthropist Sonu Sood’s statement that people want a “person of humble origin” as the CM.
In a video posted by Congress Twitter, which has gone viral, Sood is seen saying that “a person who becomes CM only after being pressed into it can bring about a change”, followed by Channi’s statement. A collection of visuals and dramatic background music features him as the man. For CM’s work.
In the video, Sood says, “The real chief minister, or even, the king, is the person who is pressured to do the job…and is told that you deserve it. Such is the person.” can bring change. One should not tell everyone that he should become the Chief Minister…”
Captioning the video clip, in Hindi the Congress has said, “Punjab is saying that we will empower everyone with our seal.”
However, there has been no official statement from the Congress or even the state unit about Channi being chosen as the CM face.
Till last week, the top leadership in the Congress was bound by the explicit insistence of state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and declaring the chief ministerial face for the upcoming assembly elections. But it looks like that is not the case now as Sidhu’s face is completely missing from the video clip.
It is also being said that Channi’s handling of the recent controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security lapse in Ferozepur helped his case and the Gandhi family got to see the bigger picture.
The official Twitter handle of Punjab Congress has also shared the video clip.
Sources have said that Rahul and Priyanka had contemplated electing a Dalit leader as chief minister in September, when Captain Amarinder Singh was ousted from the top post following a domestic dispute with Sidhu. The high command had reposed faith in Sidhu to keep the herd together after the captain left.
Over the past week, after the issue of PM security lapses, the scales have shifted in Channi’s favour. He alleged that his government had compromised on Modi’s security when the PM’s convoy got stuck amid a blockade by farmers on a flyover on the Moga-Firozpur highway.
Channi reportedly told Priyanka that the BJP had alleged a security threat due to “poor voting” at an election rally that Modi was about to address. After the breach in security, the PM returned without attending the rally.
Since taking power, Channi has learned the art of playing in the gallery, from helping road accident victims to meeting protesters. Internal surveys suggest that Channi’s stock has risen in the last few days. Once Sidhu was late in replying.
The 47-year-old CM became the first Dalit to hold the top post in Punjab, and projecting him is an attempt to appeal to the state’s 33% population.
