Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann told the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday that the security cover for all 420 VVIPs in the state would be restored from June 7.
The development comes after the death of singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot by 8-10 unidentified assailants on May 29. Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, known as . known as Sidhu Moose Wala He was 28 years old at the time of his death.
Moose Wala died after the state withdrew the security cover along with other VVIPs.
The Punjab government on Thursday informed the High Court that the security cover was withdrawn as they required security personnel for the anniversary of Operation Bluestar on June 6.
The Mann-led Punjab government has since been criticized for reducing security for VVIPs. Sidhu Moose Wala was shot.
The Punjab government referred to Operation Bluestar in the context of a June 1984 military attack to eliminate terrorists hiding in the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The Chief Minister of Punjab visited Delhi today and met Arvind Kejriwal. Mann has announced a judicial commission, headed by a High Court judge, to investigate the murder of Sidhu Moose Wala.
Punjab Police has said gang rivalry was behind the murder of the singer. A Canadian gangster claimed responsibility for the murder in an unverified Facebook post.
Sidhu Moose Wala’s father, in a letter to Mann, criticized his government for linking his son’s murder to a gang war and demanded an apology from the Punjab Police chief.
