Have you seen any food outlet with hoardings like “pure vegetarian” or “both vegetarian and non-vegetarian available”? Do you find it offensive? Well, at least one Twitter user does. She not only termed the “pure vegan” signs as “disrespectful and non-inclusive”, but also accused them of “legalizing discrimination against people with different preferences”. That person cleverly took a dig at these sign boards, confusing and frustrating the internet at the same time. “All these “pure vegetarian” signs in food outlets are offensive and non-inclusive. Clearly stating that other food preferences are “impure” and legitimizing discrimination against people with different preferences,” he tweeted.

The tweet, shared on January 15, received a lot of attention from social media users, who tried to explain the purpose and intent behind writing “pure vegetarian”.
“Being a non-vegetarian, your tweet has increased my respect level for people who follow pure vegetarian diet. One user wrote, they should be able to eat pure vegetarian without having to face this kind of nonsense.

One of them also said that it is “an individual right” not to eat meat or to enter a restaurant serving non-vegetarian food.
I am a non-vegetarian and I support the food preferences of vegetarians.
It is also an individual right not to eat meat or to enter a restaurant serving non-vegetarian food.
I have never been discriminated against by my vegetarian friends who accept my food choices. — Prakash (@orthopgk) January 16, 2023
“Pure here refers to the special” echoed something on the social media platform.
It’s ok IMO. Pure here refers to exclusive. These restaurants exclusively cook only vegetarian food. Some people do not like to eat in outside restaurants where both veg and non-veg dishes are cooked. There is no need to make an issue out of everything.- Sister Michael (@anchan_sonia) January 16, 2023
“Vegetarians are comfortable eating pure veg. So what’s the point? Non-veg eaters are not deterred by this. It’s just extra comfort zone given to vegetarians,” wrote a user.

One of the Twitter users said that the “pure vegetarian” tweet looks like someone is protesting with a blank placard. The tweet read, “It seems like protesting with an empty placard. Pure vegetarian refers to vegetarian food, that’s all. Pure means that there is no admixture of oil, lard or other inedible meat items. It’s still wrong to discriminate on the basis of faith/caste, but it’s just Indian English.
