London: UK Queen Elizabeth Tuesday is planned to make its first public appearance in five months when the royal family and other dignitaries gather for a memorial service in honor of her husband Prince Philipwho died last year.
Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who had been with his wife for more than seven decades, died in April at their Windsor Castle home, two months before his 100th birthday.
Only 30 mourners were able to attend her funeral due to strict coronavirus rules, which meant the Queen sat poignantly alone as her husband of 73 years was lowered into the royal vault of the palace’s St George’s Chapel.
Tuesday’s Thanksgiving service at London’s Westminster Abbey will be a huge event, with Buckingham Palace saying the 95-year-old Queen was actively involved in its planning.
The monarch has been forced to cut back on her duties after spending a night in hospital for an unspecified illness last October and was advised rest, and has since canceled several planned events. After that there are concerns about his health.
A palace source said Tuesday morning that the Queen was currently planning to attend the service in what would be her first public appearance since falling ill. It is scheduled to start at 1030 GMT.
The occasion will also be her second son Prince Andrew’s first public visit since he made an undisclosed payment to settle a US lawsuit over allegations of sexual assault of a teenage girl decades ago, a claim he denied.
Joining him in the congregation will be other senior royals, foreign kings and queens, friends of the late duke, politicians including Prime Minister Boris Johnson, military figures and more than 500 delegates from charities and other organizations.
