CHENNAI: Packages and benefits are pouring in in the hospitality sector as monsoon tourism picks up pace this year. Typically, June and July see a drop in booking and occupancy rates when schools reopen. But this year the trend of traveling early is keeping things busy.
Thomas Cook (India) VP-Leisure Travel Santosh Kanna said, “Pent-up demand and easing of restrictions are witnessing a strong continuation post the traditional summer holidays and we are seeing 30% growth from Chennai and Tamil Nadu for monsoon. Not only from families, but our young professionals/millennials and couple segments are witnessing a boom in both domestic and international destinations.”
weekend destinations like Puducherry, Ooty and Coorg are riding the wave of popularity along with jungle excursions. Prateek Majumdar, Chief Marketing Officer, Mahindra Holidays & Resorts said, “We are seeing high demand for our hill station resorts such as Kandaghat, Safari Corbett and Naldehra in the north as well as Mahabaleshwar, Goa in the west, Cherai, Coorg and Virajpet in the south. Destinations like Puducherry, Kumbhalgarh, Udaipur and Cherai are popular throughout the year. He added that guests are looking for a quick getaway rather than a long vacation, with Mahindra Holidays expecting “occupancy to rise by around 85% in the second quarter”.
ITC Hotels Region Manager (South) and GM ITC Grand Chola Zubin Songdwala said, “Monsoon tourism is approaching in a great way, and at ITC Grand Chola we have seen a lot of guests opting for our ‘short break’ package , during which they can choose from at least one night. We are expecting monsoon tourism to pick up pace.”
