‘Quit Congress, want to be an independent voice’: Kapil Sibal files nomination for Rajya Sabha polls, Akhilesh Yadav present

Meeting between veteran Congress leader Kapil Sibal and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav is underway, said sources on Wednesday. Rajya Sabha ticket can be given to ‘G-23’ member from SP.

The filing of nominations for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections began on Tuesday. Top parties, including the ruling BJP and main opposition SP, are in the process of finalizing their list of candidates.

According to a report in The New Indian ExpressSamajwadi Party is confident of winning three seats. One each can be given to RLD chief Jayant Choudhary and Sibal.

The report, quoting its highly placed sources, said that the SP will convene a meeting of its MLAs and MLCs later this week to take a final call on the candidates for the three seats. Of the 11 seats to be captured, five are occupied by the BJP, three by the SP, two by the BSP and one by the Congress.

If Jayant Choudhary comes to the Rajya Sabha, he will return to Parliament after eight years as he represented Mathura in the Lok Sabha from 2009-2014.

Meanwhile, Sibal is believed to have cordial relations with several SP leaders including Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan. He represented the recently jailed Khan in the Supreme Court and helped him get interim bail.

He also helped Akhilesh retain the party’s cycle symbol in 2017, when the first was locked in an intense family feud, perhaps the worst in the existence of the SP.
