Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev Australian Open Men’s Singles Final To win a record 21st Grand Slam title on Sunday. After going down two sets in the title match, Nadal rallied to defeat Medvedev in a grueling final in Melbourne. With his win, Nadal surpassed Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the list of most men’s singles majors and became the first man to win more than 20 Grand Slam titles in singles. Nadal won 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in a thrilling final in Melbourne.
Earlier, Medvedev took a break in the fifth and seventh games to win the first set in 42 minutes.
The two then exchanged two breaks each, before the second set went to a tiebreak, where Medvedev won in an entertaining set that lasted 84 minutes.
The set was wrecked when a protester was holding a banner that highlighted refugee custody, before being quickly dragged away by security officers while Nadal was serving for the set at 5-3. Jumped in the middle of the court.
Nadal then fought back and won the third set as he took on Russia’s second seed in the ninth game as the crowd roared to him.
In the fourth set, Nadal kept his hopes alive by crushing an increasingly agitated Medvedev, breaking the Russian twice.
In a dramatic final set, Nadal broke Medvedev’s serve in the fifth game, but the Russian returned to level the set in the 10th game.
