Congress leader Rahul Gandhi released the first volume of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s autobiography Ungalil Oruvan (One of You) In Chennai on Sunday.
The first part of the autobiography contains experiences from his early life. In it, he traces his school and college days, adolescence, early political contributions, marital life and the MISA struggle, recounting the 23 years leading up to 1976.
Gandhi released the book in the presence of Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. Gandhi will also visit the Congress office at Satyamurti Bhavan, where he will meet the newly elected Congress members of the civic bodies. Stalin is scheduled to address the gathering at the end of the ceremony.
The first copy of the book was received by senior DMK leader and state water resources minister Duraimurugan.
DMK General Secretary and State Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan presided over the event, while DMK Treasurer and MP TR Baalu played the lead role. DMK women’s team secretary and MP Kanimozhi delivered the welcome address. Poet and lyricist Vairamuthu and actor Sathyaraj and other guests also addressed the gathering.
The book release is considered as an opposition gathering as leaders of several parties like CPIM, RJD, NC and representatives of Trinamool Congress, TRS and NCP also attended the event. Earlier, Stalin had lauded Gandhi’s speech on Tamil Nadu during the budget session last month, saying that the BJP can never rule Tamil Nadu in its lifetime.
Asked why he mentioned Tamil Nadu so many times in his speech, Rahul had also said, “I am a Tamil.” Stalin praised the Congress leader’s speech and thanked him on behalf of all Tamils. “You have given voice to long-standing arguments. Tamils in Parliament, who rest on unique cultural and political roots, value self-respect,” Stalin said.
