Indian Railways has received the Commission for Railway Safety (CRS), authorization for introduction of AC Electric Traction to and from Guwahati Railway Station.
According to the Ministry of Railways, Guwahati is the largest and busiest railway station in the Northeast. It is now connected to all major cities through 25 kV AC traction.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has successfully completed electrification work of total 649 RKM / 1294 TKM from Katihar to Guwahati. Thus the Total HDN (High Density Network) route (649 RKM) falling in NFR has been made operational with electric traction.

This great achievement will now connect New Delhi with Guwahati on uninterrupted electric traction. This is yet another effort by NFR for capital connectivity through green transport.
It may be mentioned that Northeast Frontier Railway has already started trains with electric traction with the arrival and departure of Brahmaputra Mail with AC traction from Kamakhya station from last 22 October.
With the completion of the electrification of Guwahati station, other premium trains like Rajdhani Express, Tejas Rajdhani Express etc from Northeast can now be switched to run on electric traction from Guwahati to National Rajdhani and other cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata etc. Is. Without deflecting traction change.
This electrification work will save our foreign exchange reserves spent on HSD oil, and provide greener transportation and a lower carbon footprint.
In addition to the above, passenger trains with high speed and heavy goods trains can be run.
Some of the benefits to be gained on account of electrification of the sections are:-
1. Net savings on foreign exchange spent on HSD Oil will be ₹300 crores per year.
2. Consumption of HSD oil will also come down by 3400 KL per month thereby reducing dependence on imported petroleum.
3. Due to uninterrupted train operation, the inevitable traction change at New Jalpaiguri and New Cooch Behar will now be done away with. This will increase the movement of trains.
4. Due to increased mobility, total running time between Katihar to Guwahati will reduce by 2 hours (approx) due to higher speed of trains. As a result, no more than about 10%. Trains can run in the section.
5. Electrification enables faster movement of heavy goods trains.
6. Due to the increased line capacity, 10% new passenger trains can be introduced and this will help in introducing more Rajdhani Express for capital connectivity projects.
7. Electrification will reduce dependence on imported petroleum.
8. With electrification, Head on Generation (HOG) technology can be used instead of End On Generation (EOG) system, with two DG sets installed at either end of all Link Hoffmann Busch (LHB) coach fitted trains. Power cars.
9. Electricity generator cars which consume about 100 liters of diesel per hour can be saved apart from the noise, smoke emissions during running.
10. Electric traction will reduce greenhouse gas emissions thereby reducing carbon footprint.
