Rain wreaks havoc in Hyderabad: Rain water entered homes, 150 families reached relief camp

Heavy rains inundated several low-lying areas of Hyderabad on Saturday, following which 150 families were shifted to relief camps. Rain water entered homes in various residential colonies in Hayat Nagar, where some residents complained that their household items were washed away.

Roads in some areas of the city were flooded with knee-deep water after the rain. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) said 150 families in an area in Hyatt Nagar were shifted to a safer place after floods and providing them food and water.

According to the rainfall data of Telangana State Development Planning Society, the Lingojiguda ward office in Saroornagar in the city received 131.5 mm of rain, while several other areas also received heavy rainfall from 0830 am on Friday till 0600 am on Saturday.

The society said the GHMC building area in Secunderabad recorded 95.3 mm of rain, followed by Patigadda at 69.3 mm. Moderate rain occurred in many other areas as well.

In Chintakunta, a bike rider fell into a drain late on Friday night and rescue and relief personnel tried to nab him. However, he reached home safely, official sources said. Several two-wheelers were damaged after a wall at a cinema hall collapsed on Friday night following heavy rains.

TV channels showed a crocodile following heavy flow in the Musi river in the city. The river, otherwise, lacks a massive flow of water. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijaya Lakshmi and LB Nagar MLA D Sudhir Reddy visited the rain-hit areas on Friday night.

The mayor, who held a tele-conference with the GHMC officials last night, urged them to take measures to ensure that there is no loss of life and property due to the rains. The IMD weather station in the city said in its forecast alert for Telangana that heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over Adilabad, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mulugu and other districts from 1730 hrs on Saturday to 0830 hrs on Sunday.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur at many places over Telangana during the same period.

Meanwhile, a report from Warangal said that two youths were washed away in a drain in a village in Dornakal mandal of Mahabubabad district on Saturday. Police said a body was found this evening. Both the youths were on a fun trip to the drain. The drains are in spate after heavy rains lashed the state in recent weeks.
