JODHPUR: A POCSO court in Sirohi on Monday sentenced a rapist to death, terming the case as the rarest of the rarest.
The accused had raped and strangled an eight-year-old girl in September last year. This was taken up by the district police as part of the plan of the case officer to expedite the investigation and ensure speedy prosecution.
The court said in its decision, ‘Children have every right to live happily in the society without any fear and insecurity. But today’s newspapers are full of news of rape with girls. It is a matter of great concern if children are not safe outside their homes.
‘Curse for the accused society’
“The POCSO Act was amended in 2019 by the legislature due to the spurt in such crimes against children. Hence in the present case, the accused is a curse to the society and it is appropriate to give him death sentence,” the court further said.
special public prosecutor Prakash Dhawali Said that the court had convicted the accused Nokram alias Bharma on September 24.
Nokram had raped the minor on September 25, 2020, under Anadara police station in Sirohi district, when she along with her brother and another child had gone to bathe in a rain-filled drain. “Nokaram took the girl captive and frightened the two children. He brutally raped her and strangled her before throwing her body near the drain,” the prosecution said.
The court examined a total of 24 prosecution witnesses and the police ensured that none of them turned hostile. The investigation was conducted by Narendra Singh, the then Anadra circle officer who arrested the accused.
