A court in Rampur on Thursday reserved its order till 4 pm on an appeal by Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan challenging his sentence in a hate speech case that disqualified him from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. .

On 27 October, the MP-MLA court in Rampur convicted Mr Khan in a hate speech case and sent him to three years in prison.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Rampur court to hear and dispose of Mr Khan’s application for a stay of his sentence. The top court had also criticized the pace of proceedings for Mr Khan’s disqualification by the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

A lawyer present during the hearing said that the MP-MLA court heard the arguments of Khan’s lawyers and public prosecutors on Thursday and reserved its order.

Mr Khan’s lawyers questioned the veracity of the CD, which was produced as evidence in the 2019 case, and sought quashing of the sentencing order.

The prosecution argued that Mr Khan never denied that it was his speech and claimed that he was an MP at the time and that he should have been responsible while delivering the speech.

After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the court said that it will give its verdict after 4 pm.
