Rashmi Kumari and K.K. at the 50th National Carrom Championship at NDMC Talkatora Indoor Stadium. Srinivas won the women’s and men’s categories.
It was a record 11th national title for the defending women’s world champion Rashmi.
Rashmi said, “This time it was an unexpected title for me”, as she played several matches in the league stage, team championship and a draw of 64 in the individual event.
“It was really tough because the juniors are playing a great game. In the final, Nagajothi scored a black slam in the second set”, recalls Rashmi, recounting her 23-18, 18-19, 25-5 victory in the match for the gold.
Rashmi was equally appreciative of her earlier opponents.
“I defeated Akanksha Kadam in the semi-final, and she is the national junior champion. I had to play three sets in the quarter-final against M. Khajima of Tamil Nadu, who showed a great game”, said Rashmi.
K Srinivas defeated Jugal Kishore Dutta of Assam 22-25, 25-11, 25-11 for the men’s title. He struggled to get off to a poor start in the semi-final against Prashant More to win in three sets.
