They can offer products and services round the clock in both self-service and assisted mode
The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday said existing banks can open digital banking units to offer products and services in round the clock self-service and assisted mode.
In the Union Budget, the government announced to set up at least 75 such units in 75 districts as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to commemorate 75 years of the country’s independence.
As per the guidelines on setting up of Digital Banking Units (DBUs), the products and services provided at DBUs include account opening, cash withdrawal and deposit, KYC updation, loan and complaint registration.
“Digital banking products and services shall generally mean those financial products/services that have an almost end-to-end digital life cycle in their design and fulfillment, in which initial customer acquisition/product delivery is essentially self-service or assisted Self-service happens digitally,” it said.
A DBU is a fixed fixed point business unit/hub housing to deliver digital banking products and services to ensure convenient and cost-effective banking to the customers.
The guidelines state that scheduled commercial banks having experience in digital banking are allowed to open DBUs in Tier 1 to Tier 6 centers without the need to seek permission from RBI.
Each DBU shall be clearly placed with separate entry and exit provisions. These units will be different from the existing banking outlets with the most suitable format and design for digital banking users, the guidelines said.
