Ready to contest assembly elections as candidate, says Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh CM says whatever seat BJP finds suitable, he will face election

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that he is ready to contest the upcoming assembly elections in the state as an MLA candidate on a suitable seat by the BJP.

He said this during a conversation with journalists in Lucknow on the evening of January 1. “I am ready to contest the assembly elections from Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, whatever seat the party finds suitable,” he said. Currently, Mr. Adityanath is a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, which he assumed after becoming chief minister and resigning from his Lok Sabha seat of Gorakhpur in 2017.

Sources close to Mr Adityanath said the statement was in a way to demean Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who had announced in November that he would not contest assembly seats, taking forward his party’s election campaign. Mr. Yadav is a Lok Sabha member from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh.

“This announcement by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shows that he is confident of victory, and is not afraid of any attempt to tie him to his seat during the election campaign,” said a close aide of the chief minister.

Elections are scheduled for earlier this year, with the Election Commission of India team being told by political parties in the state that they were in favor of timely voting, despite the threat of a third wave fueled by the Omicron version of the coronavirus.
