New Delhi Govt withdraws decade old rule for which senior bureaucrats had to pay ₹300 per month for using official desktop/laptop at home, said two officials requesting anonymity.
During the prolonged COVID-19-led lockdown in 2020, many people realized the importance of working from home, and the government received several representations calling for this antiquated practice to stop.
The government reconsidered its January 2012 order and decided to do away with the practice of deducting ₹300 per month from the salary of officers of the rank of Joint Secretary and above, he said.
“The new order is effective from November,” said one of the officials mentioned above.
The limit was fixed in the January 2012 circular issued by the Department of Expenditure of the Union Finance Ministry. ₹1 lakh for installing personal computers including software at the home of bureaucrats.
As per the extant rule, an officer is entitled to avail the facility at home by paying ₹300 per month from the date the computer is installed at his residence. However, the payment for the broadband connection was made on the basis of his eligibility for telephone bill reimbursement, the officials said.
