NEW YORK: US Representative Lee Zeldin revealed on Saturday that he was diagnosed with early-stage chronic myeloid leukemia last November, but said he responded well to treatment and has now recovered.
Zeldin, a Long Island Republican who is running for governor of New York, said the diagnosis had no effect on his job or Army Reserve duties. The Iraq War veteran said he experienced no side effects from the treatment and that his health is now phenomenal.
“Over the past nine months, I have achieved complete remission, expect to live a normal life, and my doctor says there is no sign of the disease in my system,” Zeldin said in a statement released through his congressional office. There is no evidence.
Zeldin, 41, is in his fourth term representing the eastern side of Long Island, which includes sprawling suburbs, rural farms and the Hamptons. Zeldin is a supporter of former President Donald Trump and, in January, objected to election results certified by Congress that Joe Biden had defeated him.
In April, amid allegations of sexual harassment that led to the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo, Zeldin announced that he would run for office in next year’s election.
Zeldin’s hematologist, Dr. Jeffrey Vaserka, said the congressman responded exceptionally well to targeted therapy and achieved complete remission.
Successfully treated chronic myeloid leukemia is now a chronic disease with a normal life expectancy, Vaqirka said in a statement released through Zeldin’s office. “Congressman Zeldin is incredibly healthy, is expected to enjoy a normal life and has no evidence of illness.
