The PBG Commander commands the unit to deliver the National Salute upon the arrival of the President, which is followed by the playing of the Indian National Anthem by a collective band, as well as the unfurling of the National Flag of India. Military bands, pipe and drum bands, buglers and trumpeters from various army regiments perform during the flagpole ceremony. Navy and Air Force bands also participate in these ceremonies.
‘Beating the Retreat’ has emerged as an event of national pride when colors and standards are paraded. The celebrations date back to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the Indian Army developed the unique ceremony of performing indigenously by collective bands. The ‘Beating Retreat’ symbolizes an age-old military tradition, when soldiers stopped fighting, put on their weapons and left the battlefield and returned to the camps at sunset at the sound of the retreat. The colors and standard are the cover and the flags are at the bottom. This ceremony creates a longing for the time gone by.
