Residents of Kathivakkamin Ennore in north Chennai have urged the Greater Chennai Corporation to move a waste transfer point from near the local market where vegetables and provisions are sold. “Three wheelers and mobile coaches are brought here daily. This is a central point. The accumulated waste causes a lasting odor and attracts insects to the area. There is a government school 100 meters away from this place and children are also suffering from this health hazard,” said G.K. of Nettukuppam. Gunasekaran said.
Residents of at least seven residential areas, including Nehru Nagar, Satya Nagar, Sivan Padai Veedukuppamand Bhadrakali Nagar, set up shop in this market and have to pass through it to reach their homes. “We are demanding that the dump yard be shifted. Similarly, the sanitation workers segregate, dump and burn the garbage near the Kathivakkam Road Over Bridge, which should also be stopped. Our area is already polluted and burning only adds to it,” said P. Ambuchezhiyan of Nehru Nagar.
JR Mohan of Ennore Anathu Gramamanala Sangam Arkattalayar said the waste transfer point had come to the community hall built by the then Chief Minister MG Ramachandran for the use of residents. “It was not kept open for a long time and was not used. Then the administration got the dining hall constructed. But the entire structure was demolished without opening the dining hall for public use. There is no good community hall in our area. We want the government to shift the garbage dump and build a hall there.
An official source in the civic body said they would look into the request.
