the former India Cricket captain Mithali Raj has reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s letter saying that she is ‘overwhelmed’ and ‘honoured’. Mithali, one of the icons of women’s cricket, took her retirement on 8 June after playing international cricket for 23 years.
In tweets referring to the PM’s letter, Raj wrote: “It is a matter of only honor and pride when one gets such warm encouragement from our honorable PM Shri @narendramodi ji, who is a role model for millions including me. And there are inspirations. I am overwhelmed by this thoughtful acknowledgment of my contribution to cricket.”
“I will cherish it forever. I feel inspired and encouraged for my next chapter and will work hard to live up to the expectations of our honorable Prime Minister in contributing to the development of Indian sports.
In his letter to Raj, who retired after a career spanning 23 years, the PM said, “You have served Indian cricket for more than two decades. You need to excel over the years with the required talent, tenacity and transformative edge. This enthusiasm has not only helped you, but inspired many other budding players as well.”
“One way of looking at your career is through the numbers. During your long playing career, there are many records that you have broken as well as created. These achievements, including the most runs in women’s international cricket The players involved in the making, tell a lot about your abilities.”
“But, at the same time, your success goes beyond statistics and records. You are a trend-setter, an athlete who has broken many mirrors and a phenomenal source of inspiration to others.”
PM Modi expressed hope that Raj will contribute to Indian sports in the times to come.
He ended his career after scoring 7805 ODI runs in 232 matches at an average of just over 50. He scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is, as well as 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four half-centuries.
