She pulled out of a virtual meeting attended by senior members and expressed support for an independent candidate in the civil elections
Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly has joined an ever-increasing list of BJP leaders from West Bengal who are venting their grievances against the party leadership. The actor-turned-politician has not only expressed her support for an independent candidate contesting the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections but also opted out of a virtual meeting of the BJP’s West Bengal unit late Tuesday evening.
Senior BJP leaders including National Vice President Dilip Ghosh and State President Sukanta Majumdar were present in the meeting. Ms. Ganguly is a member of one of the committees set up by the BJP for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections.
Ms. Ganguly is a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha and has held key positions in the party such as the head of the BJP women’s wing of West Bengal. He has expressed displeasure over the candidature of ward number 86 of the municipal body.
Former BJP ward coordinator Teesta Biswas had died in a road accident a few weeks back. Ms Ganguly reportedly wanted a ticket for her husband Gaurav Biswas.
Mr. Vishwas has filed his nomination papers to contest the election of Kolkata Municipal Corporation from Ward No. 86 as an independent candidate. “Today my belief is confirmed that Teesta’s death was not just an accident but a murder. Sorry BJP4 Bengal, I am proud in my low capacity,” Ms Ganguly had said on social media.
In another development, the West Bengal BJP suspended a BJP leader from Kolkata, Chandrashekhar Basotia, who had opposed the distribution of tickets for ward coordinators. The party has asked senior leaders of West Bengal not to comment on Roopa Ganguly’s issue.
For the past few months, the party has been battling attacks from senior leader Tathagata Roy. Mr Roy has repeatedly targeted a section of BJP leaders and blamed them for the party’s defeat in the 2021 assembly elections.
