The two-day rugby tournament began at the Race Course Stadium here on Saturday. According to the organisers, 25 teams (both men and women) from different districts are participating in the tournament to be held in knock out and league format.
Tamil Nadu Rugby Football Union President VVR Raj Satyan, who presided over the 21st Annual General Meeting here, said that in the last seven years, the number of youth taking up rugby has increased manifold. He appealed to the government to encourage this sport in such a way that more number of candidates from far flung places can participate in the game.
The teams qualifying from the knockout and league stages will face off in the semi-finals and finals to be held on Sunday. Besides the office bearers, national rugby players including Venkatesh, Shankar and Noel, who participated, said that the game is being played in 100 countries across the world and in 24 states of the country.
