Russia Ukraine war: Microsoft suspends sales and services in Russia, provides technical support

Microsoft is the latest technology company to halt its business and sales in Russia this week amid the war in Ukraine. “We are announcing today that we will suspend all new sales of Microsoft products and services in Russia,” said Brad Smith, President and Vice President, Microsoft.

In addition to halting sales, Microsoft says it is actively working with cyber security officials in Ukraine to defend against Russian cyber attacks.

“Since the war began, we have taken action against Russian status, destructive or disruptive measures against more than 20 Ukrainian government, IT and financial sector organizations. We also took action against cyber attacks targeting several additional civilian sites is,” Smith says in blog post,

Microsoft is also providing grassroots enabling resources with the help of the Microsoft Philanthropy and United Nations Affairs team. The company is in constant dialogue with NGO associations and Red Cross agencies for financial and technical assistance.

Russia is facing heavy sanctions from around the world this week. The US government has halted flights, while businesses have stopped operating out of the region. Apple also stopped selling its products, and other brands such as Airbnb, Google and YouTube shut down their services in the country.

Ukraine’s ministry contacted ICANN via a letter, asking for Russian websites and servers to be shut down. Meanwhile, Russia is said to have blocked access to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter as well as news bodies such as the BBC in the country.

The war situation in Ukraine is hardly receding, with both countries unable to settle the matter amicably.
